Things to Know Before Buying RAM for Ryzen 7 5800x for Your PC
There are several factors that you need to consider when buying Ram for your PC. No matter what type of user you are, there will always be a product out there which is suitable for your needs and budget.
There can be so many options available in the market, but not all of them will match your needs and requirements.
Therefore, we have come up with a list of factors that you need to consider before buying a Ram for your PC.
There are several types of DDR technology present in the market. The latest one is DDR4 and if you have an old PC then most probably you will need DDR3 Ram, so that your machine can handle them and work efficiently.
However, if you have a newer PC and want to get an upgrade on your RAM, then we would suggest that you go for the DDR4 technology because it has several advantages over its predecessor. The most important ones is that it is much faster (transfer data 70 percent faster).
So, if you are looking for a ram upgrade, then DDR4 is definitely worth considering as it’s the latest technology.
Remember to check what kind of motherboard you have before buying any product to avoid inconvenience at a later stage.
There are different types of motherboards available in the market, and you must know what kind of motherboard you have before making any purchase.
The Ryzen 7 5800x prefers 2666mhz memory or higher. If you are using lower-speed memory, it will only run at the maximum clock rate of your RAM.
For example, if you put in 3200mhz memory but enable XMP for 3000mhz (because that’s all your 3000mhz kit is set to), the memory will still run at 3200mhz.
If you put in 3000mhz memory and enable XMP for 3200mhz, it will run at 3200mhz. If you then change the timings manually to 16-16-16-36 (because that’s what Ryzen 7 5800x prefers) but keep the 3000 MHz XMP profile, it will still run at 3200 MHz
However, if you set the timings manually to 14-14-14-34 (which is suboptimal for Ryzen 7 5800x) and also select the 3000 MHz memory frequency via XMP, it will actually be running at 2666 MHz (because that’s what the memory is set to, minus some small overhead).
This is why you need to make sure the speed matches the XMP profile AND you’ve changed the timings manually if necessary. I recommend setting them both to 2666 MHz (or 3200 MHz) whether your RAM has an XMP profile.

Memory Frequency & CAS Latency
If your RAM has an XMP Profile, just enable it, and you’re good to go.
If your RAM doesn’t have an XMP Profile but is capable of one of the standard speeds (2666 MHz, 3200mhz, etc.), then set it to that speed manually in the BIOS.
If your RAM does not have an XMP Profile but it’s a different speed (e.g. 2400 MHz) then you need to set the timings manually in the BIOS. The timings will be listed in this format: CAS Latency: tCL-tRCD-tRP-tRAS (e.g. 15-15-15-36).
If you don’t know what timings to use, just set them all to the lowest possible value (e.g. 9-9-9-24) and then go into Windows and run one of these free memory testing tools I linked to above. It will then test all the different timings and automatically pick the best ones for you.
When it’s done testing, just restart your computer and go back into the BIOS. You can then try manually setting the timings to whatever is recommended in that tool (e.g. 15-15-15-36) or you can try an intermediate value (e.g. 14-14-14-34).
We recommend the following timings for Ryzen 5 & 7 CPUs: tCL 15 tRCD 15 tRP 17 tRAS 29.
Since RAM frequency & timings are linked, you might find that setting your RAM to lower speed results in better performance.
This is why I recommend using the free memory test tools and letting them do all the work for you instead of manually messing with timings.
When overclocking, it’s generally a good idea to enable any XMP profile first and then increase the voltage.
Here are some guidelines:
When you first apply a voltage, try increasing it by 0.025v at a time (e.g. from 1.2v to 1.225v or from 1.3v to 1.325v)
If your system becomes unstable, decrease the voltage by 0.025v at a time until it becomes stable again
Once you find the highest frequency that is stable with your current settings, start increasing the voltage by larger amounts (e.g. +0.05v or +0.1v) until it’s no longer stable.
If you are unable to get to the highest clock rate with your RAM because of the voltage, then dial back all of your settings until it becomes stable again.
With very few exceptions, you should never have to increase any CPU Core Voltage on a Ryzen system for 24/7 use (i.e. setting XMP and leaving voltage on Auto or increasing it by a small amount should be good enough).
As we said at the beginning, PC gaming can be an expensive hobby, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find affordable products that deliver good performance.
